More spam than monty python sketch

Is it just me or is the amount of spam actually increasing?

No it is not you, it is increasing, spam posts are beginning to appear without "http" in the title. Very annoying, anything suspect I just get rid of now.

I am getting dubious about visiting this site at all... What else are they letting in? If simple spam just walks in when other sites block it so easily, what about more sophisticated malware?

Spam and Malware are different things altogether.

Malware is simple, you just block the lot using an Anti-malware/Anti-virus.

Spam is more problematic if you want to let people make posts.
You can't just block everything, so some spam is going to get through.
It comes and goes in waves, xmas and new year is always a busy time for it.

As said before just ignore it as best you can.
(Maybe I'm a bit more used to it, I've been a forum moderator for 10+ years so must have seen, and removed, thousands of spam posts and spammers).

The main problem is with 'spambots', programmes that post advertising spam.
They use false IP addresses (computer addresses) and computer generated lists of names/passwords to register new names all the time.
They can bombard a site with hundreds of new registrations a day (or even an hour).
When something like this happens human moderators just can't keep up.

Most of the companies being advertised don't even know they are paying for spamming.
They have paid what they think is a respectable company to 'raise their internet profile' (It's called Search Engine Optomiszation, or SEO).
The dodgy company gets someone to spam forums and then says "Just look how many websites your company is now mentioned on".
The stupid thing about this is that the big boys like Google filter this crap anyway and ratings don't improve, so they are paying for nothing other than annoying everybody.
Not all SEO providers are spammers, there are genuine SEO companies out there, they don't use this spam tactic.

PS. To point out what I said about blocking spam.
You may have noticed that between xmas and new year there was no spam on the forum?
But that was at the cost of blocking ALL new registrations completely, so nobody new could join to ask for help.
    Not realy an acceptable solution.

I'm intelligent enough to know that I don't know everything.
But I'm good at searching for, and finding, stuff.

No it’s not you, it’s increasing a lot.

I can see twelve posts at a time, eight of them are spam malware, whatever they are called.

One genuine post amid about 16 spam ones this morning, getting ridiculous.

This is just getting crazy. This am, logged on and the entire first 2 pages of posts are spam spam and spam. I mean i don't even open them, but you can tell. This is only since ads were allowed. I don't see them, thanks to adblocker and I don't want to! But I will give up on yourable if this doesn't get fixed soon.

I don't open them either but it takes ages to filter out the genuine posts.
As for people leaving YA, do you think that is the intention by leaving the spam therefore giving an excuse to shut the site.

I think this is a general theme for forums in many areas of life - people are moving over to social media.
